Granny Square Cat Beanie Pattern
This pattern goes hand-in-hand with my latest YouTube tutorial, where I demonstrate how to crochet this beanie step by step! If you're a visual learner, be sure to check it out!
This beanie is beginner-friendly, customizable, and fun to make. Whether you prefer soft pastels or bold, edgy colors, this piece will add personality to your wardrobe.
Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Medium-weight yarn (two colors used in the demonstration)
- Hook: Size H/5.0mm
- Extras: Scissors & yarn needle (for weaving in ends, if desired)
Stitches Used (US Terms):
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- dc = double crochet
- sp = space
- st = stitch
Step 1: Crochet the Granny Squares
You will need eight granny squares, each consisting of four rows.
Round 1: Foundation
- Start with a magic ring (or ch 4, sl st into the first ch to form a ring).
- Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then 2 dc into the ring. Ch 2 (first corner).
- [3 dc, ch 2] three more times into the ring.
- Sl st to the top of the first ch 3 to close. (Four corners in total.)
(The Dark brown is if you are doing the Magic ring and the light brown is the Chain 4 alt.)
Round 2: Expanding the Square
- Sl st to the next corner ch-2 space (switch color here if changing colors).
- Ch 3, 2 dc in the same space (this forms half of a corner).
- In each remaining corner: [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc].
- Sl st to the top of the ch 3 to close.
Round 3 & Beyond: Growing the Square
- Sl st into the next 2 dc and into the corner ch-2 space (switch colors if desired).
- Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc into the same corner. Repeat in each corner.
- Between corners, work 3 dc into each space between clusters.
- Continue this pattern until the square has four rows.
Step 2: Joining the Squares to Create the Beanie
Joining Process:
- Take one of the eight squares and add a fifth row to it.
- Take another square and only add a fifth row to one side.
- At the first corner cluster of that side, ch 1, then grab the corner of the five-row square and sl st into it. Ch 1, then continue with 3 dc into the same corner of the four-row square.
- Continue working across the edge, alternating between the squares using 3 dc in each ch-1 space until the side is fully joined.
- Once that side is complete, finish the square normally.
- Repeat this process to join three more squares to form a strip.
Attaching the Fourth Square:
- Attach this square as before, but this time it will be joined on two sides.
- Attach one side first, then complete one regular edge before joining the second side.
- Finish the square normally and check that all squares are aligned before continuing.
Adding the Remaining Squares:
- Take the fifth square and attach it to the middle section using the same joining technique.
- For the sixth square, attach it to the bottom left corner and join it along two sides.
- For the seventh square, flip the work and attach it to the right middle section, joining three sides.
- For the eighth and final square, start with one corner cluster. Since this square is attached on all sides, begin joining at the second space before the corner instead of the corner itself.
- Complete the joining process, ensuring all sides are securely attached.
Final Steps
Once all squares are joined, shape the beanie as desired. If needed, add a finishing row of single crochet or slip stitches around the edges for a clean finish.
Customization Ideas:
- Add a ribbed brim for extra warmth.
- Use variegated yarn for a unique color effect.
- Attach pom-poms for a playful touch.
